Indiana Massara: I was a co-writer on “Squeeze” and it was written at a time when I was a little lost in my love life. I felt I wanted somebody to squeeze at night and when we wrote the song it was cuffing season and lots of my friends were in relationships and I was “man, what the heck!”
The video was done without a co-lead which is a first for me. It captures a girl who is living her best life and spending time with friends but just wants somebody to share life’s experience with.
17: Why is this music video important to you?
IM: The video is a moment in time when we are carefree and just living in the moment with friends. It was shot before pre-COVID and it’s important to me because it reminds me of how much I took that freedom for granted.
17: What's the best part about playing Rooney?
IM: Rooney is a bisexual, intelligent, loyal and sassy character that is known for staying true to herself no matter the consequences.
The best part about playing her is that she’s seen as a role model for people in the world that are a little different and that it’s OK to be who you are.
So many people tell me that she’s given them confidence and the courage to be accepting and appreciative of the person they are.
17: How is your work-life different since the pandemic?
IM: Actually, I’ve been busier! People were demanding more content and I found I was really in my creative waves more. Spending time at home gave me the headspace I needed to be artistic without interference and it allowed me to focus on my acting and music.
17: What's your favorite social media platform right now?
IM: Probably TikTok. I spend hours on that app scrolling through and not getting bored. I’m always sharing videos with my friends and we message back and forward when we find something hilarious or relatable.
17: What do you love about your fans?
IM: My fan base is super positive and is always there for not only me but each other. I see them lift each other up when they’re going through something and I see them become friends with each other which is the coolest thing ever. I never see them leave hate against other fandoms. They’re literally the sweetest and they motivate me daily to keep going. I love them.
17: What's something about you that your fans might not know?
IM: Even with the following I have and the great opportunities around me, I am still a normal teenager who has the normal teenage ups and downs and I still go through periods of anxiety.
I think everyone sees the influencers' lives as almost perfect online and they expect them to be that positive, happy role model 100% of the time. My life just isn’t that. I try to keep it real online. Especially on the [Dropouts] podcast.
That’s where I really talk about my life on a week-to-week basis and I am always honest about what I’ve been going through.
17: What's the best fan interaction you've had so far?
IM: I have met and had a lot of DMs from fans saying that Rooney gave them the courage to come out and be themselves.
I love that I play a character that they can relate to and one that encourages them to be confident with who they are, no matter how hard that might be.
It’s the greatest thrill for me about acting – knowing that a character I play can be so relatable that it motivates and carries a message into someone’s everyday life is amazing.
