2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed – An SUV Masquerading As A Continental GT @ Top Speed
The revised Bentayga Speed looks a lot the outgoing model, but Bentley made some changes to the design, mostly inspired by the Continental GT and the Flying Spur.
It’s not very obvious at first glance, but the front fenders were reshaped for a sportier look. The front grille is bigger now, while the headlamps feature the recently introduced “cut crystal glassware” design.
The bumper sports more notable changes, as the side vents are taller now, while the center vent no longer extends toward the corners.
More notable changes are visible around back, starting with the thin and oval taillights. These are borrowed from the Continental GT and replace rectangular units seen on the outgoing model.
At the same time, Bentley moved the license plate recess from the tailgate into the bumper, making room for a big badge and “Bentley” lettering between the lights. The rear bumper now carries oval tailpipes that mimic the shape of the taillights.
Although I’m not a big fan of these taillights on the Bentayga, it’s something we have to get used to since it just became the company’s corporate design. The revised fenders make the Bentayga Speed look wider and a bit more aggressive than before.
What’s new on the inside
As the most important part of a Bentley, the interior of the Bentayga needed more than just a few nips and tucks that come with a facelift.
And Bentley delivered, as the Bentayga Speed features brand-new seats, revised door panels, a new steering wheel, and a new, larger infotainment display that measures 10.9 inches.
The screen is now integrated in the center stack just below the redesigned air vents and above a larger control panel for the A/C system.
The fully digital instrument cluster comes from the Continental GT, so you can now customize it to a number of different views, but it also displays more detailed information about the vehicle. There’s plenty of new tech as well, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C outlets, and a bigger and faster tablet for the rear seats.
When it comes to trims, you can now choose from a few new options, including dark tint diamond brushed aluminum that mimics the finish of the front grille. There’s also new stitching and quilting, as well as extensive options from Mulliner.
As before, you can opt from three different seating layouts.
There's the four-seat configuration with two second-row seats, the classic five-seat layout with a rear bench, and the seven-seat version with two additional seats in the trunk section.
The four-seat version gains almost four extra inches of knee room thanks to seats that recline more than before.
Is the 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed more powerful than before?
As it was the case with the regular Bentayga, the facelift doesn’t bring more power to the Speed. This means that the twin-turbo, 6.0-liter W-12 generates the same 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque as before. But since this output makes it the fourth most powerful (third if we don’t include hybrids) production SUV in the world, there is no real reason to complain.
What’s more, while the outgoing Speed was only 26 horses more powerful than the regular Bentayga, now there’s a bigger gap between the two because the W-12 is no longer available with the standard model. The latter can only be specified with either the 4.
0-liter V-8, which delivers 542 horses and 568 pound-feet of torque, notably less than the Speed. Of course, Bentley continues to offer hybrid and diesel drivetrain, but they don’t come close in terms of output and performance (except for the diesel’s matching torque figure).
With no changes to the specs, the Bentayga Speed retains the previous 0 to 60 mph sprint of 3.9 seconds, which is mighty impressive given the weight of the SUV. Top speed also remains unchanged at a whopping 190 mph.
Only a few SUVs are more powerful than the Bentayga Speed
The Bentayga Speed is the world’s fourth most powerful SUV, surpassed only by the Lamborghini Urus (641 horsepower), Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid (670 horsepower), and Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (707 horsepower). However, it remains the most powerful luxury hauler, climbing above the Rolls-Roce Cullinan, rated at 563 horses in standard form and at 600 horsepower in Black Badge trim.
The Bentley Bentayga Speed is the fastest SUV in the world
While it’s slower from 0 to 60 mph than most high-performance SUVs due to its heavy weight, the Bentayga Speed delivers the highest top speed at 190 mph. This benchmark is actually shared with the Lamborghini Urus, but it’s notably faster than all the other performance SUVs, usually rated at between 170 to 180 mph.
How much does the 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed Cost?
Given the substantial changes inside and out, the facelifted Bentayga Speed should cost a bit more than the old model.
The outgoing SUV retails from $235,700, so I guess it’s safe to assume that the updated hauler will fetch at least $250,000 before options.
The Bentayga Speed is the most expensive model from the lineup and commands a premium of at least $70,000 over the entry-level version.
Is the 2021 Bentley Bentayga Speed better than the Rolls-Royce Cullinan?
While Lamborghini, Porsche, and Jeep offer SUVs that are quicker and more powerful than the Bentayga Speed, none of them match the British hauler in terms of comfort and luxury.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the only SUV that’s glamorous enough and even though it doesn’t look as sporty, it does have the power to compete. This British behemoth comes with a twin-turbo, 6.75-liter V-12 under the hood and 563 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque on tap.
Opt for the Black Badge model and output jumps to a more appropriate 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. That’s only 26 horses below the Bentayga Speed and an identical torque figure. The Cullinan needs 4.
5 seconds to hit 60 mph, so it’s notably slower, while its top speed is rated at 174 mph, 16 mph below the Bentley. But the Rolls-Royce is also notably more expensive, with the Black Badge model coming in at a whopping $382,000.

Although it hasn’t changed under the skin, the Bentayga Speed looks fresh thanks to this facelift.
The Continental GT-inspired cues make it look sportier than before, especially when compared to the blocky Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
It’s still surprisingly fast for a vehicle that tips the scales at more than 5,000 pounds and it offers significantly more room than the Continental GT without sacrificing too much on the performance front.

Keeping up with the Joneses could be a tough feat if that proverbial family has a 2021 Bentley Bentayga parked in the driveway.
This ultraluxury SUV offers all the comfort of a leather-filled parlor plus plenty of tech features, a trio of powerful engine choices, and enough cargo space that you can schlep home a few cases of Montrachet when the wine cellar needs restocking.
Supple upholstery, rich wood trims, and real metal accents commingle with modern infotainment touchscreens and wireless connectivity features. The Joneses really know how to treat themselves. Apart from the decadent Rolls-Royce Cullinan, other luxury SUVs have a difficult time stacking up to this Bentley in terms of creature comforts.
What's New for 2021?
Bentley freshened up the Bentayga's styling for 2021 with a more upright grille, new taillamps, and updated wheel designs.
The SUV takes styling cues from the brand's new Continental GT coupe and Flying Spur sedan. The Bentayga's cabin sees a new 10.
9-inch infotainment display, tweaked dashboard styling, Apple CarPlay compatibility, a revised rear-seat entertainment system, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
We the V-8 model best. Even though the Speed's powerful W-12 engine puts more pep in this big SUV's step, its price premium over the V-8 is substantial.
We'd suggest sticking with the eight-cylinder model and adding some niceties to it, such as the adaptive suspension, the rear-seat entertainment system, and the 20-speaker Naim stereo.
And choosing the Touring Specification package will give you a suite of driver-assistance features.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Bentley offers a variety of powertrains for the Bentayga. On the low end, you have a 443-hp hybrid arrangement with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an electric motor. Then there's the 542-hp twin-turbo V-8 engine.
We haven't driven the former, but we can tell you that the latter emits a hearty burble on its way to 60 mph, which it does in just 3.8 seconds. The Bentayga Speed ups the ante with a 626-hp W-12. Back in 2017, when the Speed made 600 ponies, this supersmooth powerhouse delivered a 3.6-second result in our 60-mph test.
The W-12's power delivery is creamier than the V-8's, and its performance felt more robust during passing maneuvers. Bentley claims that the Bentayga Speed, with a claimed top speed of 190 mph, is the fastest SUV in the world (although the Lamborghini Urus might have something to say about that).
Regardless of what's under the hood, all Bentaygas utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission and come standard with all-wheel drive.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
It should come as no surprise that the Bentayga Hybrid pulls in the best EPA fuel-economy ratings of the range. It also offers up to 18 miles of electric-only driving before the turbocharged V-6 fires up.
The V-8-powered model's ratings of 14 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined aren't bad for a large SUV, but the W-12's are. It earns estimates of 12 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.
That said, on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, the 12-cylinder Bentayga surprised us with a 23-mpg result.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Filled with rich-smelling leathers, real wood trim, and glitzy metal accents, the Bentayga's cabin stays true to its luxury branding. Bentley allows buyers to customize just about everything.
Buyers can opt for front and rear buckets, seating four, or they can select a three-across second-row bench and a pop-up two-seat third row to seat seven.
While the rear seat doesn't feel as lavish as that of the Bentayga's key rival—the Rolls-Royce Cullinan—it still offers plenty of space for adult passengers to stretch out.
Several different colors of leather upholstery are available, as are two different mother-of-pearl-faced Breitling dash clocks, a bottle cooler for rear-seat passengers, adjustable ambient interior lighting, and even a safe with a biometric lock and fingerprint reader. The Bentayga's cargo area is generous, at least in two-row versions; we were able to fit nine carry-on suitcases back there.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All Bentayga models come standard with a 10.9-inch infotainment screen with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The optional entertainment system consists of two 10.
2-inch displays mounted to the front-seat headrests. With it, rear-seat passengers can browse the web, interact with the Bentayga's infotainment system, or play movies.
A 12-speaker stereo is standard, but you can opt for Naim's 20-speaker premium audio system.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have put the Bentayga through any crash tests, and due to the SUV's price and low sales volume, it's unly either agency will.
Bentley offers several driver-assistance features, but unfortunately, almost all of them cost extra. Paradoxically, buyers of “lesser” luxury SUVs such as the BMW X7 or Cadillac Escalade will find many of these features come standard.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
all other Bentley models, the Bentayga comes standard with a three-year warranty that has no mileage expiration. Also, the first maintenance visit is free. The Cullinan offers more value here in the form of a four-year warranty package and four whole years of complimentary maintenance.

When you think of automotive luxury, chances are good that the names Rolls-Royce and Bentley spring to mind first. Few cars say you’ve made it quite the juggernauts from the latter with their impeccable style and the roar of their V8 or W12 engines.
While they may have power and handling to deliver a thrill, the best place to be is in the back seat, as you get chauffeured around town in peerless luxury.
But you actually have to make it for real to consider owning one, since none come in under the six-figure mark, while most ask for a lot more.
Established in 1919, the brand quickly made a name for itself by winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans multiple times in the years that followed.
However, sporting prowess is not what springs to mind when the automaker is mentioned today. The company has had close ties with Rolls-Royce in the past, with a series of mergers and acquisitions in its history.
Today, they compete against each other in the ultra-elite luxury segment.
Lineup of Bentley Cars
There are only a handful of models in the current range of Bentley vehicles, with a select few offering multiple configurations. All the models are highly prestigious offerings, though, so it is difficult to do more than just scratch the surface in a summary of each of the new Bentley car models.
- Bentayga – The only real SUV in the lineup, it is presented with a gasoline powertrain and, for 2020, as a hybrid. In standard configuration, it gets the choice of a V8, a W12 in the Speed variation. The most capable of the lot develops 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque on the Speed trim, which is directed to all four wheels to launch the high-rider up to 60 mph in just 3.
8 seconds. It boasts supreme ride comfort and a fair amount of cargo capacity if you stick with the standard five-seat format and avoid the third-row setup.
- Continental GT – The less dear of the enormous executive sedans, it is presented in coupe or convertible guise. Both share the same set of power plants, with maximum outputs ranging from excellent to holy moly.
Despite its ponderous size and heft, it is remarkably nimble, thanks to a host of advanced technologies that manage body roll and steering. More discerning buyers love the Mulliner variants of each configuration, which offer bespoke, hand-crafted styling.
- Mulsanne – The priciest vehicle to bear the brand’s logo, it is also among only two that sport the ‘Flying B’ hood ornament that is reminiscent of the Spirit of Ecstacy found on Rolls-Royces. However, 2020 is the final year in its life cycle, so we’ll be saying goodbye to the super torquey V8 that throws out 752 lb-ft (811 lb-ft on the Speed).
It is as customizable as it is large, with an extended wheelbase version available for those who to be driven around in style. The EPA review of its gas mileage revealed terrible consumption of 10/16/12 mpg.
- Flying Spur – Replacing the outgoing Mulsanne as the flagship moving forward into 2021, the Spur utilizes the same V8 or twin-turbo W12 found on other motors in the garage, but it does so much more with them. Mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, it gets the hefty sedan going in under four seconds and reaches a top speed of 207 mph.
The interior is certainly spacious and it makes a token effort at being practical with a 14.8 cubic foot trunk.
- Bacalar – Designed by the masters of hand-crafted opulence over at Mulliner, it is the most elite two-door convertible in the world. In fact, only 12 units exist. Every inch has been painstakingly tailored to deliver unparalleled class and elegance, but this also means they are incomparably extortionate. Purchase estimates are somewhere in the two-million-dollar range.

What to Consider Before Buying Bentley Motor Cars
At this price point, it is only natural to expect something extraordinary from your investment. And, the premium manufacturer does not disappoint. We are hard-pressed to find anything to complain about, here is a list of the strengths and apparent weaknesses, nonetheless:

- Surprisingly fun to drive when you are not being chauffeured
- Enormous interiors with top-notch materials
- Built-to-order customization
- Almost nobody can actually afford these beauties
- Customization pushes the absurd cost higher
- Limited editions are super rare
To be honest, even the cheapest new Bentley car could be mistaken for the most expensive. However, the $177k Bentayga is almost designed for paupers by comparison to the Bacalar.
The exact pricing for the most exclusive nameplate varies depending on exactly how it is hand-crafted.
Only 12 were produced, though, so you can expect the cost of a 2021 Bentley Bacalar to be somewhere in the ballpark of $2,000,000, if you even manage to find one in the US.
While the new Flying Spur with its impressively W12 engine is a natural-born sprinter, it is actually the Continental GT that claims to be the fastest of the 2020 Bentley motors. And with a 0 to 60 mph benchmark time of 3.6 seconds, we aren’t arguing. It also earns top marks and in our books as an overall package.
Some buyers are not satisfied with the standard exclusivity of the brand’s lineup, and desire something a little more personal and special. For these discerning shoppers, nothing less than a Mulliner hand-crafted ride will do.
The sedan and convertible types of the Continental GT get this special treatment, as well as the hyper-exclusive Bacalar. Both the interior and exterior are tailored to your every whim.
And though they retain the same levels of performance as their baseline siblings, they supply infinitely more style and sophistication, which is saying something.
